Heritage restoration is pivotal to preserve the legacy of the past. At A1 Services we recently consulted with various shires across Victoria, to assess significant sites in need of a new life, safeguarding cultural and structural integrity and playing our part in ensuring that they are safe and enjoyable for generations to come.
Our teams took on this ambitious project to revive historical landmarks, understanding a meticulous and delicate approach is imperative during the evaluation and assessment stages. Cultural heritage walks were undertaken to identify any sites of cultural significance where needs were identified conducting Secondary Impact Assessment (SIA). Works were far reaching from Dilapidation Reports and assisting with data entry of hundreds of damaged properties. Our team also coordinated simple culvert cleans, track remediation, to sourcing professional contractors to resolve complex works such as landslip repair and stabilisation. We are happy to report that these efforts resulted in $300,000 in additional government funding to support flood recovery works.
There were incredible and significant memories of the past in these structures. A project highlight for our team was coordinating the reopening of a historical bridge in regional Victoria. The bridge has been closed since the October 2022 storm event and subsequent floods. The bridge was originally constructed in the 1920’s as a timber structure to enable tourists to cross the gorge. The timber bridge was washed away by floods and was replaced with metallic riveted plate girders circa 1935. After World War 1 there was a lack of metal available in Victoria. Using their resourcefulness, the builders used recycled metal from a bucket dredge. The bucket dredge was previously used for gold mining in the area. The abutment supporting the metal beams are beautifully constructed using blocks of granite sourced from a tunnel under the town which was used for diverting water to access gold. The wing walls have been created using local granite and dry-stone building techniques. Unfortunately, part of the dry-stone retaining wall has collapsed and will now require repair. The challenge will be to stabilise and reinforce the retaining walls using modern techniques and keeping the heritage look of the walls and bridge. Aiming for a seamless blend of maintaining the past, embedded in modern building advice.
Our team were honoured to aide in the revitalising of this bridge. They provided a delicate balance between innovation, accuracy, and a passion for preserving what remains after natural disasters. We believe nothing is more satisfying than taking on a project, coordinating it effectively, and delivering a solution that not only meets but exceeds the client’s expectations.
