Building Trust and Resilience: Our Journey in Disaster Recovery

Natural disasters strike without warning, leaving communities devastated and in need of support. During the catastrophic 2022 floods, A1 Services demonstrated leadership in estimating and assessments, providing critical support across four states. We also rapidly mobilised for Cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand and Cyclone Jasper in FNQ in 2023. Our team undergoes trauma training to help homeowners when they have to relive challenging experiences. By adopting a trauma-informed approach and arranging for social workers or counselors when needed, we build trust and offer comprehensive support. Striving to exceed industry standards in our Disaster Recovery Management.

Here, our people share their personal experiences.

Opening Minds and Building Perspectives

One powerful lesson we’ve learned is the importance of perspective. Working in disaster-affected communities has opened our eyes to their everyday struggles. Basic things we take for granted can be stripped away in an instant, highlighting the fragility of normal life.

“It has opened my perspective and mind to understand the difficulties communities are faced with, in response to a Natural Disaster. Basic things that we generally take for granted in our day to day lives are taken away from people; this can happen anywhere, anytime and often without a lot of warning.”

Community and Collaboration

In times of crisis, the true spirit of community shines through. We’ve witnessed how affected communities band together, showing an incredible willingness to help one another. This spirit of collaboration has been central to our disaster recovery efforts.

“What is really powerful is seeing how an affected community bands together and people’s willingness to help in time of need. Seeing firsthand people want to help one another without hesitation. It breaks down barriers that sometimes exist in normal daily life in a diverse community.”

Our team’s efforts to work alongside residents and local councils have been met with gratitude. By identifying damages and providing solutions through accurate estimation, we’ve built a strong sense of trust and collaboration.

“There has been a sense of gratitude towards our efforts in helping affected communities recover, being out and working alongside residents and councils to help them get on with their lives.”

Quick Response and Trust Building

Responding quickly and being present on the ground are crucial in disaster recovery. Immediate action helps establish a strong connection with local councils and the community, fostering trust and showing that we are there to assist in any capacity needed.

“By responding quickly to the call out for assistance and having a presence on the ground, we were able to establish a connection with the local council and in turn the community.”

Empathy and Support

Empathy is at the heart of our disaster recovery efforts. We prioritise ensuring that the basic human needs of affected communities are met. A key component of our interaction with impacted residents is listening. Whilst we are there to ‘measure, and assess’, we know there is a need for us to just listen to the human story.

“Ensuring that people’s basic human needs were accounted for was our priority, in an effort to help the community back onto the path of restoring normality. We try and do this by listening closely to them.”

Building Gratitude

Our team has come away from these projects with a greater sense of gratitude, especially during times of celebration such as the holiday season. Being present, listening, and showing a genuine willingness to help have built a lasting trust with the communities we serve.

“Our team came away from this project with a greater sense of gratitude. Particularly the fact that Christmas was just a few days away and there would be people who had become displaced or were having to go without.”

Safety and Stakeholder Relationships

Ensuring the safety of both the community and our team is paramount in disaster recovery efforts. By establishing strong relationships with local council stakeholders, we can offer targeted support and ensure that help is provided where it’s needed most.

“Establishing relationships with key stakeholders within the local council to offer support where required, and just doing what needs to be done.”

Our Learnings

These experiences profoundly impacted our people, highlighting the importance of empathy, collaboration, and the genuine human touch needed in disaster recovery efforts.

Our experiences in disaster recovery have reinforced the importance of empathy, collaboration, and the genuine human touch we know our people possess. At A1 Services, we are committed to standing with communities in their time of need, helping them rebuild stronger and more resilient.
